Is There An App For That?

A great friend of mine and extremely great marketer Willie Crawford just launched his new Soul Food Mobile App today.

And who would have thought there would be an App for Soul Food Recipes?  There is an app for everything these days.  And there is no end in sight.

The world has gone mobile with five times more people accessing the Internet via mobile devices versus PC’s.

It was reported last week that the Android Marketplace just surpassed 10 Billion downloads since inception and it is growing on a very sharp curve upward just like Apple’s iTunes App store (Click Here to read about it).

It is also predicted that by 2013 there will be 1 Billion (or more) HTML 5 capable mobile devices in the marketplace.  It allows users without an iPhone, iPad, Android, and Android tablets to participate and download mobile apps (Click Here to read about it).

Which means the world is going APPSolutely Mobile!  Having a Website is great (and necessary).  But it is evident that Mobile Apps are the NEW Website of this decade.  And if you’re in business you should (and must embrace) mobile apps.  If you were to survey your current customer base, you would find a HIGH percentage of the time they are accessing more and more on their mobile devices.

    In 2010, Fox Business ran an article, “Does Your Business Need Social Media?” Can you imagine an article like that running in today’s digital world? It would be rejected and shrugged off.       Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Goes Mobile

      Everywhere you look you see an app to solve something for us. Constantly I hear: “There’s an app for that.”

      It’s true, with smartphone sales going through the roof, it is no wonder business owners are scrambling to get an app built for their business. The holidays are upon us, and just like past seasons there will be record numbers of mobile phone sales (particularly smartphones).

      Speaking of there being an app for almost everything these days, it is no surprise that the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has launched an app as reported by Mashable below:


      The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is getting a technology update for its 85th year by way of an official mobile app. The Parade app will be available on both iOS and Android ahead of next Thursday’s event, and feature a route map, NYC tips, a WiFi hotspot finder and a way to track specific participants in the parade.

        Comparing PC’s to mobile phones . . . mobile phones are very affordable and far more accessible than ever before (usually within arm’s reach almost the entire 24 hours per day).  Even when you charge your phone, usually it is still ON, always on you or very nearby and it knows where you are based on the GPS installed on over 90% of the phones in existence today.  Reaching consumers wherever they are, your business has a huge opportunity to sell, promote, engage, and be remembered.

        Location, location, location

        Since mobile phones know where you are creates a huge game changer and without a doubt the next big tidal wave in the mobile world.  Radios, televisions and PC’s don’t have this technology and are much more limited in what they could do. Digital cameras and GPS are built into every mobile device coming off the shelves currently, and the possibilities continue to be mind boggling on how we all access and interact with our reality (known as Social Media).

        By offering specific exclusive content, special offers, fun and engaging contests or top user incentives through your mobile app, enhances the experience for your customers and keeps them coming back again and again. This can turn regular sporadic customers into loyal raving fans almost overnight.  Be careful not to make your offers too competitive and complicated or most people will tune out.  Keep it simple and you will be surprised by increased visits and higher transaction amounts.

          FourSquare For Business

          Foursquare is part of the next generation of mobile applications. Described by the company that created it as “a friend-finder, a social city-guide, and a game that encourages users to explore their neighborhoods and rewards them for doing so,” Foursquare is an application that is designed to allow people to “check in,” or, in other words, indicate their whereabouts. People check in at a variety of different types of places, including their homes, parks, offices, restaurants, bars, cafés, and various businesses.

          The idea is to allow friends to share their favorite spots in any new places that they may discover. In this way, Foursquare is very much so an application that is tantamount to viral marketing and it can be used to occur age word-of-mouth participation by your customers; here’s how:

          Customer Loyalty:  first, consider using Foursquare to offer customer loyalty promotions, such as offering a complimentary appetizer to any customer that checks in three times in a given week or writes a positive review. Foursquare makes offering these types of so-called “Foursquare specials” easy by providing free tools to allow businesses automatically fulfill or unlock the Foursquare special (e.g. Foursquare says you have been here 3 times this week! That’s a free appetizer!; Foursquare users get 20% off their order every 10th check in!).

          Points: Foursquare operates almost like a game as well, in users gain points for checking in, adding a new venue, repeat visits, etc. The points are assessed by venue, as well as a whole. Businesses can encourage customers to check in by providing value for the number of points accrue,  such as offering to donate a nickel per point to a charity or allowing users to earn discounts in relation to the number of points they have.

          Mayors: the user that has the most points for a specific venue is designated as the “mayor” of that venue. Such, many businesses will choose to offer something of a larger value to the member who becomes the mayor of their venue, such as a gift certificate or a complimentary bottle of wine. Many Foursquare users are very competitive over the “mayor” status and this “battle” can translate into increased exposure, and accordingly profits, for a business.
          To do lists: next, consider creating a “to-do” list for Foursquare users. A Foursquare to-do list operates very much like a contest or scavenger hunt. You would create a to-do list based on aspects of your business you would like to promote, such as your new line of cocktails or a new fitness class.When a user completes the to-do list, you could award him much the way you would award the “mayor” – by providing a complimentary item or service.
          Everyone’s a winner: lastly, consider making everyone a winner by offering a free upgrade to anyone who checks in (and shows they did to the cashier) or by offering 10% off to everyone in the store when the analytics show that 100 people have checked in at your venue.

          Without a doubt, participating in sites like FourSquare  can be a key part of growing your business presence in the eyes of  internet dependent local consumers.

            Customer Birthdays Equal Added Profits In Your Business

            Recently I wrote about collecting critical data (intel) within your business.  YES there is GOLD in them thar hills!

            It is so IMPORTANT to identify who your customer is first of all.  If you have a retail storefront, you invested probably lots of your savings or investors did with theirs.  And you should make that investment work for you, not you working for it.

            And there are many ways with technology today to accomplish your objectives.

            Assuming you have started on the path to collecting data/intel from your current customers, one piece of critical data is your customers birthdays.  And if at all possible, find out who your customer’s spouse or significant other is as well.

            Birthday promotions work for almost every business, but for example purposes I will talk about how a restaurant could (and should) implement such a promotion.

            It is very common for a restaurant to offer a FREE dessert or even a FREE meal on your birthday (although it is getting harder to find restaurants offering free meals which tells me they do not understand the long term profitable effect of doing this kind of promotion).

            Setting up a birthday reminder service is quite easy.  Once you obtain your customer birthday, simply enter it and set your reminder.

            Now for the purposes of this specific promotion, you’ll want to set that reminder for at least three weeks before your customer birthday.

            The reason is you are not just going to send a card with an offer in it.  Quite opposite.  You are going to do something that will result in you getting 10 to 30 or more NEW customers that you did not have before.

            What you are going to do is call the customer spouse or significant other and explain to them that you would like to throw a surprise party for your customer.  99% of the time the spouse or significant other will be thrilled about the idea.

            So what does the spouse or significant other need to give you in order to send invites to friends, business associates and family?  Give you the list of course!  This includes the name and full postal address.  This list of people are going to become your new prospective customers and you’ll see why in a moment here.

            If you want to make this easy, I use a nifty company that sends the physical invite cards for me.  I simply upload my list, and they print the cards, stuff them in the envelope, lick it, stamp it (with a real stamp) and drop it in the mail for me all for far less than most greeting cards you buy in the store.  You can learn about it here http://seeit.me/soc .

            So next you will take that list and send out the invites along with RSVP back to you (or the spouse/significant other).

            You will actually have the party at your restaurant, and it is suggested to offer the people invited free drinks and 50% off a meal etc.

            Once you determine how many are coming, this will help determine if you will get a special birthday cake or use individual dessert cakes that your restaurant may already serve.

            Be sure and have a digital camera on hand the day of the party.  You’ll want to take several pictures.  This is one of the key ingredients in capturing big profits and customers on the long road.

            Remember that easy service I use to send greeting cards?  http://seeit.me/soc Now what you will do as a final step is send cards out to all of the attendees a couple of days AFTER.  My service allows me to upload pictures which will print right onto the greeting card I choose (over 20,000 in the library online).

            So it will only take me 10 to 15 minutes to create my card including the pictures I will upload.  Each card can even be personalized with the persons first name.

            And if you are in the restaurant business, it makes sense to put another offer in this card, right?  Of course it does!

            And everyone will love getting this card because the pictures will show what a good time everyone had.  And your customer who you threw the party for will never forget this.  I guarantee that.

            You might find yourself spending $100 to $200 dollars on a promotion like this, but I would ask you to crunch the numbers and tell me if it was worth it.  Most advertising these days that you would spend upwards of $200 dollars MIGHT get you five to 10 new customers.

            Yet with the birthday promotion, you can double and triple your numbers.  Not to mention the customer loyalty and satisfaction you will receive from it.

            Now if you want to drive it even more, it would be real easy to get this kind of customer to fill out customer reviews online.  We live in a social media world.  You can’t hide bad customer service any longer.

            And speaking of social media, if your restaurant had a Facebook page, you could post those birthday party pictures there too for your other customers to see.  Your new prospective customers will see how you treat them.  Take it a step further and post the pictures in your restaurant.

            This type of promotion creates raving advocates for your business.  Customers that won’t hesitate to refer their friends, family and business associates.  We’ll talk about that in the next post where I reveal how to create and maintain a VIP Club and creating incentives for your customers to refer others.

            In fact, once you get skilled with these kinds of promotions, I will go as far as to say you will never have to advertise in the traditional way ever again, while growing your business by double and triple or more.  Wash, Rinse and repeat!

              Your Business and the 80/20 Rule

              You’ve heard the statement I am sure in the sales world that your top sales people produce 80% of your sales revenue.

              The same holds true with your customers/clients in business.  The top 20% of your customers/clients will produce 80% of your revenues.

              It is true that it is fairly easy to track sales people, their sales and activities (or lack thereof).  However, I often hear all too often from retail business owners that they do not have a system in place to track their customer purchases.  Things like how often they visit, how much they spend etc.

              And even better yet, going deeper into your customer/client info.  When is their birthday?  What is their spouses (or significant other) name?  And all the specific info that would matter in making the sale to your customer/client.

              I love the TV series 24.  And within this great mystery suspense series it is ALWAYS about collecting intelligence info.  That is why you hear “What intel do we have?”

              Marketing to your customer/client is no different.  What intel do you have?  If you have little to none, you have many missed opportunities and you are leaving lots of money on the table.  And that money is likely going to your competitor.

              For example, if you were running a clothing store, wouldn’t it be good to KNOW the size your customer/client wears?  So that in your communication you can state that directly on any sale you might have.  It is well known that most of the buying decision of mens clothing is done by the spouse.  Hence the reason for knowing who the spouse is.

              Did you know that most businesses lose 20% (or more) of their customers each year?  To achieve a 10% increase in sales you need to add 30% in new customers.  And the cost to add a new customer is usually six times more than simply concentrating on your best customers (your top 20%).

              The statistics are alarming as to WHY customers/clients stop doing business with your business.

              * FACTOID *:  A survey on “Why customers quit doing business with you” found that 20% of them do so for the following reasons . . .

              Three percent move away, five percent develop other friendships, nine percent leave for competitive reasons, 14 percent are dissatisfied with the product or service, and a whopping 68 percent quit because of an attitude of indifference toward the customer by the business owner, manager or employee.

              So that breaks down to 82 percent of the survey result was the lack of taking care of your customer!  And that can be (and should be) fixed by you the business owner.

              But before you can do that, you must have information (intel) on or about your customer/client.

              I also hear from business owners often that they fear asking for customer information for fear that it will be too intrusive.  Yet it is probably the single biggest expense in your business NOT doing so.

              To put your mind at ease, I offer up another FACTOID.  Have you ever visited a Radio Shack?  They ALWAYS ask for your information at the point of sale.  And would it surprise you to know that 98% or more give it without any hesitation?  Most likely, because they think it has something to do with their current purchase.

              So put your fear aside.  One of the largest electronic retailers does it as a regular practice.  You should too!

              And once you do my business friend, magical things will start to happen once you use this intel.

              There are many systems available for the business owner to collect this intel with ease without it burdening the business or employees.

              For example the use of cell phones.  Who do you know (with few exceptions) who does not have a cell phone?  Current studies reveal that these devices are kept within arms reach 22 plus hours of the day.  And there are systems in place now to collect customer intel from the use of their cell phone and is convenient for the customer and the business because it all happens in 15 seconds or less.

              You owe it to yourself and your business to collect customer intel.  You will start adding black ink to your financial statement instead of swimming in red ink and failed marketing attempts.  You already have customers.  You already have products and services you sell every day.

              Start applying these techniques and you will find that you can literally cut out the need to advertise in dying Yellow Pages, Newspapers, Radio or any other form of advertising medium.

              Said another way would be “Paying attention to your current customers/clients does NOT cost, IT PAYS!”

                Don’t Be Anti-Social If You Want To Survive The Economic Storm

                “Is social media a fad or is it the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution?” asks Erik Qualman, author of Socialnomics.  Consider these statistics he presents, and my analysis of them, and then decide how connected you should be.  Hint:  Your company website alone is no longer enough!

                As of 2010, Generation Y — those born between 1980 and 2000 — outnumbers baby boomers.  And 96 percent of them have joined a social network!  There was no initiation, no dues, no recommendations.  Just a few taps on the keyboard and voila!  Instant connection to friends and family, immediate information sharing, finding the kid who sat next to you in kindergarten story-time.

                As technology improves and changes, it also changes the way we live.  It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million users.  It took TV 13 years, the internet four years and iPod just three years.

                Perhaps the star of the social media show is Facebook, which added 100 million users in just nine months and now has over 500 million users.  Not bad for a company that began in a dorm room.  If Facebook were a country, it would have the third largest population behind only China and India.  The fastest growing segment of Facebook is women ages 55-65.  (The jury is still out on how many of those women’s children have accepted a “friend” request from their mothers.)

                We no longer search for the news; the news finds us.  More than 1.5 million pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photos, etc.) are shared on Facebook daily.  In the near future we will no longer search for products and services.  They will find us via social media.

                One out of eight couples married in the United States last year met via social media.

                Generation Y and Z — the youngest techies, born after 1995 — consider e-mail passé.  In 2009, Boston College stopped distributing email addresses to incoming freshmen.

                For those who prefer their communications in 140 characters or less, a Twitter account is a must.  Ashton Kutcher and Ellen DeGeneres have more Twitter followers than the entire populations of Ireland, Norway and Panama.  Approximately 80 percent of Twitter usage is on mobile devices people update anywhere and anytime.  The apps for Black Friday sales changed the way shoppers planned their retail strategy.  On the downside, imagine what an unfavorable tweet means for bad customer experiences.

                As a business person, I often wonder how we functioned before LinkedIn.  One of the most remarkable employment statistics I discovered while researching my last book, Use Your Head To Get Your Foot in the Door, is that 80 percent of companies are using LinkedIn as their primary tool to find employees.

                Remember the advertising slogan “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas?”  That’s a little misleading, because it also stays on Twitter, Flickr, Facebook, My Space, YouTube or any other social media you use.

                YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world.  It contains 100 million videos and receives two billion viewers each day.  Wikipedia has over 13 million articles.  A whopping 70 percent of 18 to 34-year-olds have watched TV on the web, while only 33 percent have ever viewed a show on DVR or TiVo.  And 25 percent have watched a video on their phones in the last month.  With a growing number of e-readers, 35 percent of book sales on amazon are for the Kindle.  Some publishers estimate that eBook sales will reach 50 percent in the next five years.

                There are over 200 million blogs, and 54 percent of bloggers post content or tweet daily.  Without knowing who or what organization is actually behind the blog, here are some facts to consider:

                • 34 percent of bloggers post opinions about products or brands.
                • 78 percent of consumers trust peer recommendations.
                • Only 14 percent trust advertising.

                Perhaps the most astonishing fact of all is that social media have overtaken porn as the number one activity on the web.

                Successful companies in social media have learned the importance of listening first and selling second.  Qualman says, “They act more like party planners, aggregators, and content providers than traditional advertisers.”

                Social media represent a fundamental shift in the way we communicate.  To stay current — and competitive — in business, don’t be a “twit.”  Put on your best “face” and “link” into these tremendous opportunities.

                  Affiliate Marketing Simplified

                  Being in the affiliate marketing business is not that hard now with the Internet at your disposable. It is much easier now compared to the days when people have to make use of the telephones and other mediums of information just to get the latest updates on the way their program is coming along.

                  So with technology at hand, and assuming that the affiliate is working from home, a day in his or her life would sound something like this…

                  Upon waking up and after having breakfast, the computer is turned on to check out new developments in the network. As far as the marketer is concerned there might be new things to update and statistics to keep track on.

                  The site design has to be revised. The marketer knows that a well-designed site can increase sign ups from visitors. It can also help in the affiliate’s conversion rates.

                  That done, it is time to submit the affiliate program to directories that lists affiliate programs. These directories are means to attract people in joining your affiliate program. A sure way of promoting the affiliate program!

                  Time to track down the sales you are getting from your affiliates fairly and accurately. There are phone orders and mails to track down. See if they are new clients checking the products out. Noting down the contact information that might be a viable source in the future.

                  There are lots of resources to sort out. Ads, banners, button ads and sample recommendations to give out because the marketer knows that this is one way of ensuring more sales. Best to stay visible and accessible too.

                  The affiliate marketer remembered that there are questions to answer from the visitors. This has to be done quickly. Nothing can turn off a customer than an unanswered email.

                  To prove that the affiliate is working effectively and efficiently, inquiries would have to be paid more attention on. Nobody wants to be ignored and customers are not always the most patient of all people. Quick answer that should appear professional yet friendly too.

                  In the process of doing all the necessities, the marketer is logged on to a chat room where he or she interacts with other affiliates and those under that same program. This is where they can discuss things on how to best promote their products.

                  There are things to be learned and it is a continuous process. Sharing tips and advices is a good way of showing support. There may be others out there wanting to join and may be enticed by the discussion that is going on. There is no harm in assuming what opportunities ahead.

                  The newsletters and E-zines were updated days ago, so it is time for the affiliate marketer to see if there are some new things happening in the market. This will be written about in the marketer’s publication to be distributed to the old and new customers.

                  These same publications are also an important tool in keeping up to date with the newly introduced products. The marketer has put up a sale and promotion that customers may want to know about. Besides, they have to keep up with the deadline of these sales written in the publications.

                  It is that time to show some appreciation to those who have helped the marketer in the promotions and sale increase. Nothing like mentioning the persons, their sites and the process they have done that made everything worked.

                  Of course, this will be published in the newsletters. Among the more important information that have been written already.

This is the kind of products that the program thinks is “hot”. They choose the product that is in demand without actually considering if the product appeals to them. This is not a very wise move obviously.

                  Instead of jumping on the bandwagon, try top choose a product in which you are truly interested in. For any endeavor to succeed, you should take some time to plan and figure out your actions.

                  Pick a product that appeals to you. Then do some research about that product to see if they are in demand. Promoting a product you are more passionate about is easier than promoting one for the sake of the earnings only.

                  Mistake number 2: Joining too many affiliate programs.

                  Since affiliate programs are very easy to join, you might be tempted to join multiples of affiliate programs to try and maximize the earnings you will be getting. Besides you may think that there is nothing wrong and nothing to lose by being part of many affiliate programs.

                  True, that is a great way to have multiple sources of income. However, joining multiple programs and attempting to promote them all at the same time will prevent you from concentrating on each one of them.

                  The result? The maximum potential of your affiliate program is not realized and the income generated will not exactly be as huge as you were thinking initially it would. The best way to get excellent result is by joining just one program that pays a 40% commission at least. Then give it your best effort by promoting your products enthusiastically. As soon as you see that it is already making a reasonable profit, then maybe you can now join another affiliate program.

                  The technique is to do it slowly but surely. There is really no need to rush into things, especially with affiliate marketing. With the way things are going, the future is looking real bright and it seems affiliate marketing will be staying for a long time too.

                  Mistake number 3: Not buying the product or using the service.

                  As an affiliate, you main purpose is to effectively and convincingly promote a product or service and to find customers. For you to achieve this purpose, you must be able to relay to the customers that certain product and service. It is therefore difficult for you to do this when you yourself have not tried these things out. Thus, you will fail to promote and recommend them convincingly. You will also fail to create a desire in your customers to avail any of what you are offering.

                  Try the product or service personally first before you sign up as an affiliate to see if it is really delivering what it promises. If you have done so, then you are one of the credible and living testaments aware of its advantages and disadvantages. Your customers will then feel the sincerity and truthfulness in you and this will trigger them to try them out for themselves.

                  Many affiliate marketers make these mistakes and are paying dearly for their actions. To not fall into the same situation they have been in, try to do everything to avoid making the same mistakes.

                  Time is the key. Take the time to analyze your marketing strategy and check if you are in the right track. If done properly, you will be able to maximize your affiliate marketing program and earn higher profits.

                    In 2006 (which is a long time in Internet time), Google made one of the largest dollar value purchases by acquiring YouTube for over $1.6 billion. Who would have known that would have morphed into one of the world’s most trafficked websites.

                    Google has taken advantage of the undying appetite of Internet surfers who watch over one billion videos per day.  Google index’s those videos and more often than not, you will find YouTube videos appearing on the 1st page of search results.  They can even outrank aged and established organic listings.

                    Since I have discovered that people truly are lazy and unless your video is very compelling, they will not take the time to type your website address into a new browser.  But there is a better way!  You can actually include your HOT LINKED website address into the description for your video.

                    Here’s how you do that on YouTube…

                    When posting your video you’ll want to fill out the “About This Video” section.  This is where you will insert your website address.  Make SURE to do it right at the beginning of your description.  It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to include the http:// at the beginning of your website address BECAUSE without it, it will not be a hot link or hyperlink.  In other words, your viewer will not be able to click on your website link.

                    Once your viewer has clicked your website link, another way to increase your subscriber base is to drive them to a landing page (sometimes known as a Squeeze Page) where you make a compelling offer to receive a FREE report.  Once they opt-in, then redirect them to your website.  This formula will certainly help you build a list and increase your income.  Enjoy!
